Welcome to the Artroom for Aspergers Blog. As a visual arts educator at a special needs, K-12 school, I have encountered my fair share of successes and challenges in teaching art to those with Aspergers Syndrome (AS). This blog has been created in response to my personal experiences in this area.
It is my hope to facilitate a dialogue between educators, parents, friends, students and anyone else touched by Aspergers Syndrome, exploring the special relationship between artistic development and this intriguing diagnosis.
Some questions to ponder as we begin this journey:
- How are the visual arts taught in contemporary inclusive or special education classrooms?
- How do the needs of those with AS interact with the milieu of the Art Classroom?
- What goals have been established in the education of those with AS?
As I embark in scratching my "quizzical itch," as my advisor puts it, I'll update blog with my findings. I expect that the next few months will unearth simply more questions. I anticipate a difficult but exciting trek through this fascinating world of Aspergers Syndrome.
